Author's new children's series is designed to alleviate the discomfort some parents and educators feel when discussing topics of race and diversity with children.

Toronto, ON – March 2, 2022 – For years, the topic of diversity and anti-racism has been front and center in the media. Millions have entered into a conversation about how race has impacted our history as a nation and its current impact on society. For diversity expert, and newly minted author, Rita Bhandari, addressing topics of diversity and inclusion within society starts at a young age and begins with getting adults comfortable with leading discussions about race.

The Ace Compeers, a fun-filled children’s book series, is aimed at children aged seven to 12 and is designed to be a discussion starter. The book provides children, parents, and teachers with meaningful science-based, child-friendly information about the interrelation of genetics, geography, and history. Through a cast of charming and relatable characters in the book, children come to understand that while there are differences in how race and culture set people apart, there are many more attributes that we share in common.

“For years, I have sought out ways for children to have meaningful discussions about diversity and race,” explains Rita Bhandari, a biracial inclusivity expert and author of the Ace Compeers series. “I realized that the ideal time to tackle these issues is when children are just starting to ask questions about race, skin color, and cultural diversity.”

The series is designed for readers to see themselves and identify with the book’s characters while being entertained by the adventures and stories that take place. For educators and parents, the value of the series is in providing a comfortable, appropriate base from which to launch into discussions about race and diversity. For many, entering into that conversation can be deeply uncomfortable. The discussion questions included in the books are meant to alleviate those anxieties and take the guesswork out of how to begin those important discussions.

The first book of the series, The Ace Compeers: The Secrets of Skin Colour, is a detailed 76-page read that follows the adventures of Erika (she/her), Ang (he/him), Basma (she/her), Riley (they/them), and Manjeet (he/him). Critics, from school principals, educators, and book reviewers have embraced the book and rave about its powerful message and the science-based discussion.

The Ace Compeers: The Secrets of Skin Colour is available to order from Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble and at Friesenpress as a downloadable eBook.
