The F-150 Lightning, a battery-powered version of Ford's popular pickup, debuted last month to wide acclaim — and orders are already piling in.

Three weeks after the Lightning's May 19 reveal, the truck already has 100,000 customers interested enough to plunk down a $100 deposit, a Ford spokesperson told Insider. Reservation holders can begin placing actual orders this fall, and the first trucks will be delivered in spring 2022.

The New York Times first reported the pre-order milestone.

Deposits are refundable, so it's unknown how they'll translate into actual sales come this fall. We also don't know how many Lightnings Ford plans to build each year. In 2020, the company moved around 100,000 Ranger pickups and close to 800,000 F-Series trucks.

The F-150 Lightning starts at $39,974 before destination fees and comes in four trim levels. There's a work-oriented Pro model, along with XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims. The truck gets 300 miles of range with an extended-battery option, though that figure may be conservative

The truck's low base price puts it in the same league as the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck and makes it significantly cheaper than other forthcoming models like the Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV.

Ford reported a flood of F-150 Lightning preorders in the days after its reveal, but orders have slowed down. The morning after the Lightning's May 19 debut, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company had received 20,000 preorders. One week later, that number had grown to 70,000.
