Deficiencies Across USA Medical Boards Leave Patients at the Mercy of Malpractice

By: WebWire

The pandemic has exacerbated the challenge of providing appropriate medical board oversight to ensure both remote and in person quality care delivery and safety for patients. What will happen next time there is a pandemic, the next time telehealth services soar, or if a consumer lands a doctor that shirked responsibility elsewhere?

Debarred physicians with a revoked license, or otherwise penalized in one state, can and have, continued to practice by obtaining a medical license in a different state.

“While different states have encountered complaints involving telemedicine, few states have regulations specific to telemedicine or the ability to utilize databases to identify past disciplinary actions and complaints specific to digital health and telemedicine. Until regulations for telemedicine are formulated and implemented, virtual care cannot he held to the same standard of care as in-person care,” Dr. Dinesh Patel, former Chairman of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.

Telehealth and Medicine Today (THMT) has published a survey and critical commentary exploring this topic. To read what is unveiled in more depth go to https://doi.org/10.30953/tmt.v7.363.
