Spice Company in Southern California Recalls Organic Ground Coriander Due to Salmonella Concerns

By: WebWire

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the voluntary recall of two brands of organic ground coriander spices produced by a company in Southern California. The spices were sold in California and several other states by multiple retailers and two lots could be contaminated with Salmonella. According to the announcement, the recall was initiated when the bacterium was discovered during routine sampling of raw materials.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the United States. Usually, symptoms last 4-7 days and most people get better without treatment. However, Salmonella can cause more serious illnesses in older adults, infants, and people with chronic diseases. Preventing foods contaminated with Salmonella from reaching consumers is essential as the CDC estimates that in the U.S. alone, Salmonella infections result in 420 deaths, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 1.35 million illnesses annually.

“LA Testing offers food manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers proactive microbial testing of raw materials, finished products, and production surfaces,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “If contaminated products have already reached consumers, rapid PCR testing and traditional analytical methods can be used to help pinpoint the source of an outbreak. LA Testing's network of laboratories provides both methods for a wide range of microbial contaminants.”
