Tony Robbins knows what it’s like to go hungry. That’s why he helped launch The 100 Billion Meals Challenge last year. On Giving Tuesday (December 3), Robbins announced that the initiative had already secured commitments to provide 30 billion meals to combat world hunger.
Before Robbins was the world’s #1 results coach and a bestselling author, he was a kid growing up in poverty. On one Thanksgiving, his family had nothing but peanut butter and crackers in the home when a stranger showed up with a turkey and other groceries. That act of kindness prompted Robbins to commit to help others throughout his life through The Tony Robbins Foundation and other nonprofits, including Feeding America. Recently, Robbins launched an anti-hunger initiative in partnership with David Beasley, former executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, called the 100 Billion Meals Challenge.
Robbins and Beasley hoped to provide 100 billion meals within 10 years, but after just two years of launching their challenge, they are nearly a third of the way to reaching that goal. They credit the generosity of many individuals and organizations (to include National Pasta Association, International Pasta, Feed My Starving Children, Manna Nutrition, The Global Citizen and the government of Dubai).
Robbins and his team said that in recent years, extreme hunger has surged around the world, affecting 730 million people, with another 30 million people on the brink of famine. And even in the U.S., the richest country in the world, roughly 40 million people struggle with food insecurity.
“I think if I hadn’t grown up hungry, if I hadn’t suffered, I don’t think I would work this hard,” said Robbins. “But when you’ve suffered this much, you don’t want anybody else to suffer. It’s just a horrific thing to see a child who’s starving in a world that’s so abundant.”
Robbins is known around the world for his bestselling books, personal and business coaching programs and live events that help individuals and companies overcome challenges and fears to achieve peak results. His clients have included four United States presidents, athletes like Serena Williams, musicians like Aerosmith and business moguls like Marc Benioff (Salesforce founder).
Robbins teaches that giving back isn’t just a nice thing but a key to fulfillment and success.
“Studies show that helping others triggers a more significant, lasting biochemical change than getting something for yourself,” said Robbins. “When we give more, we become more.”
