Speaking to the increasing popularity of marathon running in the US, and the rising demand for indoor training options, home gym machine makers SOLE Fitness say tech developers must keep pace.

SOLE Fitness, asking what fitness technologies and innovations are needed to keep pace with this boom.
-- While by some metrics, Americans are becoming more sedentary than ever, an opposite trend in health and fitness has emerged in recent years—the rise of fun run, 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon, and ultramarathon runners. A rise that has companies in the home fitness and exercise space, likeAs Livestrong recently reported, about 50 million Americans now run or jog, about 15% of the nation's population. Moreover, as the latest State of Running Report by RunRepeat and World Athletics verified, race participation worldwide—including at the marathon level—has grown by more than 50% in the last decade.
As SOLE Fitness explained, this is welcome news, as recreational, regular, and long-distance running are positively associated with a myriad of health benefits, including reducing the risk of death from all causes. However, as recent research in sports medicine has shown, at any given time, almost 25% of marathon runners are injured, with knees, ankles, Achilles tendons, feet, and calves experiencing injury most frequently.
As such, as the number of marathon runners spikes in the US, SOLE Fitness has announced that their research and development teams are piloting new technologies that are designed to improve the ergonomics of their treadmills—especially the support and protection they offer to the joints of the lower body.
While it has been proven that the ideal running surfaces have some give, like grass, the reality is that most runners live in urban environments that either place them on the concrete sidewalk or the asphalt road. As such, one new technology that SOLE Fitness is pleased to be debuting is a new Cushion Flex Whisper Deck, which has been developed to reduce impact up to 40%, as compared to running on asphalt.
Given that sedentary lifestyles are associated with poor health outcomes and an increasing public health crisis, the home gym machine makers at SOLE believe that brands in this space need to be doing more to improve the experience of long-distance runners who want to train at home, and to encourage those who are newer to running.
They argue that tech developers specifically need to incentivise better ways to harmonize outdoors and indoors workouts, which is why they are also prioritising new fitness tracking technologies and smart pre-programmed workout tools and piloting their use across their full range, including their more affordable models.
By better supporting the burgeoning marathon community in the United States, SOLE hopes to contribute to a healthier culture in the country, and to a happier, more engaged, and more injury-free running populace.
