Sea Turtle Conservation: Beach Ecosystem & Marine Biodiversity Report Launched

Sustainable tourism and environmental advocacy group Ever Wonder Adventure recently published a report on sea turtles and why they need to be protected.

With plastic pollution seriously jeopardizing sea turtle populations around the world, Ever Wonder Adventure outlines in its new report what will happen to marine ecosystems if humans continue to pollute waters at their current rates and thereby cause the extinction of the species.

The report comes in light of estimates by The Environmental Magazine that global sea turtle populations have declined by as much as two-thirds since the turn of the 20th century. With just 6.5 million currently occupying waters, and industrialism showing no signs of slowing down or being reigned in, experts fear that sea turtles are on the verge of extinction.

“In the vast and intricate web of marine life, sea turtles emerge as true ecological champions. They play a critical role when it comes to maintaining the delicate balance of marine ecosystems,” explained a spokesperson for Ever Wonder Adventure. “But sadly, our actions have put their very existence under severe threat, so now we have to do something about it.”

Ever Wonder Adventure explains that the main reason why sea turtles need to be protected is the influence they have when it comes to preserving biodiversity. As a keystone species, sea turtles regulate the populations of other species, preventing their numbers from growing out of control.

One particular species that they help regulate is jellyfish. Known to reproduce in “blooms” of thousands at once, jellyfish pose a serious risk to the marine food chain, and can even wreak havoc on human resource management systems. As natural predators of jellyfish, sea turtles are an important ally when it comes to keeping their populations in check, Ever Wonder Adventure adds.

Another reason why sea turtles are important is because they return to nest on the same beaches where they were born. By doing so, they redistribute sand and support the growth of beach-dwelling organisms. Moreover, after sea turtles have hatched, they migrate, and this process helps redistribute nutrients through the water as well, the report says.

“The preservation of sea turtles is essential for the well-being of our oceans and the intricate balance of marine ecology,” said the spokesperson. “If we don’t do something quickly about our reckless disposal of plastic waste into the sea, the consequences for marine life could be catastrophic.”
