Scorpion Vision Win at Automate UK Awards

Scorpion Vision has won the ‘most innovative Machine vision system’ for the second time, due to their work on a precision critical robot.

The Scorpion Vision team celebrated their second consecutive win of the most Innovative Machine Vision System at the annual Automate UK awards in Birmingham.

The machine vision specialists have been working on a precision critical robot vision problem that requires the positioning of a hypodermic needle within a 2mm square 3D cube.

Once in position, a jet of air is passed through the needle to create a positive pressure which removes meat from the shell of a crustacean. Due to the very high volume of throughput, accuracy and repeatability is key to the success of the automation system. This was achieved using a combination of close range 3D vision to create a 3D model of the crustacean, and an artificial neural network that reliably identified the specific features to enable accurate insertion of the needle into a very small area. The pose, angle of attack and depth of penetration of the needle are all critical variables.

The system can process multiple crustaceans in 1 second. This dramatically improves the efficiency of the current semi automated process whilst at the same time greatly improves the quality of the product.
