Glen Rose Certified, Full-Time School Chaplain Training Program Announced

The National School Chaplain Association (405-831-3299) has announced updates to their school chaplain training program, now equipping individuals to help meet the spiritual needs of students and staff while also working to reduce stress levels in schools.

The updated online training program offers certification for school chaplains, allowing people who are called to serve in schools gain the skills necessary to work full-time, while offering a source of emotional, psychological, and spiritual support.

The expanded certification program from the National School Chaplain Association (NSCA) includes training for how to support stressed students and school staff members, as well as several essential safety modules, including Active Shooter, Threat Assessment, and Stop the Bleed.

A recent study published in the Journal of College and Character shows that having a full-time chaplain on school premises can help students feel supported and can assist them as they deal with existential questions, as well as matters relating to daily student life. The NSCA training program is designed to equip service-oriented individuals with the knowledge needed to contribute within an educational environment. “School chaplain duties include but are not limited to prayer, counsel, and spiritual care for the school staff, the students, and their families,” explains a spokesperson from the organization. “In addition, chaplains provide guidance and help build resilient young people.”

According to the NSCA, chaplains are trained to support schools in four key ways: making schools safer, exploring and honoring student identities, creating and cultivating community, and illuminating and igniting a sense of purpose.

The training program is designed to help certified chaplains meet the needs of students with diverse religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical backgrounds, using an approach based in tolerance and a non-judgmental framework.

With open enrollment, the self-paced online program can be started at any time and can be completed in as little as 8 weeks. The NSCA school chaplain certification course is also accredited through Oral Roberts University and includes guidance from NSCA program advisors and a Senior Chaplain Board, even after employment commences.

The online application process includes confirmation of education level and ministry experience. Once background checks, training, and safety courses are complete, each participant will be fully certified as a school chaplain and eligible for full-time pay and benefits.
