Botched Surgery Prevention Awareness Campaign Launched by Quadruple Certified Dr

As the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reports a 10% increase in reconstructive surgery following the pandemic, Dr. Chip Cole launches an awareness drive.

Led by Dr. Harvey “Chip” Cole III, MD, FACS, Quadruple Board Certified Surgeon, Oculus, has announced a new awareness campaign which aims to provide patients with the necessary knowledge to avoid botched surgery.

In the new educational campaign, Dr. Cole addresses some of the most common mistakes and covers the best practices when choosing a surgeon.

“Doing copious research on the procedure you’re interested in, as well as the doctor who will be doing it, is imperative,” explains Dr. Cole. “Armed with information, patients are far more likely to find happiness, rather than heartbreak, at the end of their self-improvement journey,” he adds.

Advocating for patients to make informed decisions about their health, the new campaign cites a scholarly article published in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine: Open Access Journal. It explains that while certain criteria – such as the surgeon’s knowledge in the scope of their field – are objective, they can be difficult to quantify. Factors such as the volume of procedures performed, social media ratings, and the surgeon’s availability may be misleading.

As such, Dr. Cole recommends a different approach. In his latest educational drive, the certified surgeon advises that patients do their own extensive research and assess the potential doctor by asking direct questions. He also cautions potential surgery candidates against recommendations made by insurance providers, as those agencies are limited by their approved network.

Instead, the new campaign explains that the best approach is to listen to the word of mouth and check the doctor’s credentials. Along with getting recommendations from friends and family, Dr. Cole cites nurses as a valuable source of intel when it comes to the doctor’s reputation and standing in the medical community. Unlike doctors in the same field, nurses are not motivated by personal rivalry and will provide an honest and professional assessment.

Further, Dr. Cole explains that patients should look into the potential surgeon’s credentials, and recommends checking The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) database to make sure the doctor is board-certified in the relevant field. Patients should also be aware that certain organizations provide fee-based certificates without any training, performance, or knowledge requirements. Thus, it is equally important to research the board that issued the certificate.

With this new public awareness drive, Oculus and founder Dr. Cole hope to inspire anyone considering surgery to take a more informed approach in their search for a medical practitioner. Dr. Chip Cole also runs a 501[c]3 organization, Face Change Foundation, whose proceeds aim to help victims of domestic violence, troubled teens, and victims of sexual assault. More information on this foundation, including important announcements to come in the coming months.
