Family of Aaliyah Moton Seeks Transparency and Progress in Ongoing Death Investigation

Bessemer, Alabama — April 18, 2025 — The family of Aaliyah Moton, a young woman who passed away under unexplained circumstances on March 30, 2024, is renewing their call for answers as the investigation into her death remains unresolved more than a year later.

Despite ongoing communication and full cooperation with authorities, the family expresses concern over the lack of visible progress in the case. They are seeking greater transparency and a renewed commitment from Justin Burmeister of the Bessemer Police Department, as well as the city’s leadership, to ensure accountability and closure.

According to the family, Aaliyah’s personal belongings, which may hold both sentimental and potential investigative importance, remain in police custody. The recent resignation of the police chief has added further uncertainty to the department’s leadership and direction.

“We’ve waited patiently, hoping for clear communication and meaningful steps toward understanding what happened to Aaliyah,” said Dion, Aaliyah’s brother. “We believe more can be done, and we’re asking for the support of our community, the media, and elected officials to ensure her case receives the attention it deserves.”

They are requesting:

  • The appointment of a police chief who will prioritize transparency and public trust.
  • An independent review of the current status of Aaliyah’s case and the investigative procedures followed to date.
  • Continued public and media engagement to help ensure progress and accountability.

The Moton family remains hopeful that renewed leadership and community support will bring much-needed clarity and resolution.

“This is not just about our loss, it’s about ensuring that every family who seeks justice can trust the process,” Dion added. “We remain committed to seeing this through, and we appreciate everyone who stands with us.”
