Recently, the overseas edition of the historical and cultural documentary "Zhou Dunyi in Chenzhou" was officially released.
The documentary is produced by the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision of the CPC, the Publicity Department of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee, and the Cyberspace Administration of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee. It is jointly filmed by the Zhou Dunyi Research Institute of Xiangnan University, Chenzhou Manshan Cultural Media Co., Ltd., and the Chenzhou Beihu District Theater and Quyi Artists Association.
The documentary is divided into three episodes: "Diligence and Wisdom," "Moral Education," and "Integrity Passed Down Through Generations," each lasting approximately 15 minutes. The film delves deeply into Zhou Dunyi's governance experience, academic contributions, and ideas on integrity and culture during his time in Chenzhou, Hunan. It highlights his admirable qualities of diligence, moral teaching, and integrity. Supported by historical documents and records, the film focuses on Zhou Dunyi's life experiences, incorporating dramatized reenactments, expert interviews, recitations of his original works, and on-site filming at historical locations. Additionally, it employs new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the creative process, presenting Zhou Dunyi's image, deeds, and enduring influence in a rich and vivid manner.
Directed by local Chenzhou filmmaker Nie Tongsheng, the documentary was completed in just over two months. Key filming locations include Lianxi Academy, Yuntou Academy, and Anling Academy in Chenzhou, as well as Yuelu Academy in Changsha. Nearly ten experts and scholars from Hunan Province were interviewed for the production. The documentary has been shortlisted for the 14th "Chronicles of Light and Shadow" China Documentary Academy Awards in 2024.
Zhou Dunyi, courtesy name Maoshu and literary name Lianxi, was a renowned philosopher, thinker, and writer of the Northern Song Dynasty. He served as a local official in Chenzhou for eight years during his career, known as the "Three Terms in Chenyang." Zhou Dunyi was not only a prominent Confucian scholar but also an incorruptible official, laying a foundational theory for China's culture of integrity. His famous essay "Ode to the Lotus" is a masterpiece of integrity-themed literature and a reflection of his lifelong values. The work has had a profound and lasting influence on Huxiang culture and future generations.
