78% of Legal Professionals Are Now Using AI — But Adoption Reveals A Significant Maturity Gap

The third-annual trends report from Litify highlights the maturity of AI adoption across the legal industry.

Litify, the all-in-one platform powering legal’s top performers, today released the third annual State of AI in Legal Report. The comprehensive trends report is the result of a nationwide survey completed in partnership with a leading national market research agency to verify and analyze the results. It includes insights from hundreds of verified legal professionals with near-equal representation from plaintiff firms, full-service firms, and corporate legal departments.

The research reveals that while there has been a meaningful increase in AI adoption over the past two years, most respondents remain in the initial stages of AI maturity. This is observed in the general-purpose tools that respondents are using, the foundational tasks they are completing, and the limited organizational impact they are experiencing.

Key takeaways from the report include:

  • AI adoption jumped from 23% in 2023 to 78% in 2025.
  • The majority of respondents rely on general-purpose AI tools like ChatGPT (66%), Microsoft CoPilot (42%), and Google Gemini (24%).
  • Despite high adoption, less than 50% of legal professionals say they receive sufficient AI training, and even fewer work at organizations with an established AI policy.
  • AI usage remains largely focused on foundational tasks like legal research, summarizing matter histories, or drafting documents.
  • While 67% of organizations increased their AI investment in the past year, less than 15% say they have seen a business impact from the use of AI.

“The legal industry is past the point of contemplating AI adoption. While data shows that most are already using AI, the challenge now is the disparity between usage at an individual level versus an organizational level,” said Litify CEO Curtis Brewer. “To achieve AI’s true potential, and see its benefits to the bottom line, legal professionals must be prepared to embrace new metrics, goals, and process changes as an organization.”
