NSTA Announce 2024 Shell Urban Science Educator Development Award Winners

The National Science Teaching Association today announced the recipients of the annual Shell Urban Science Educator Development Award. The awardees (listed below) were formally recognized for their achievement during an award ceremony at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Denver.

  • Arlinda Davis, Science Teacher, Maranathan Academy, Birmingham, Alabama
  • Angel Jackson, Science/STEM Teacher, Gilliard Elementary School, Mobile, Alabama
  • Cynthia Lopez, Science Teacher, Desert View High School, Tucson, Arizona
  • Faryal Shaukat, Science Teacher, J. Frank Dobie High School, Houston, Texas

Created for K–12 classroom science teachers in urban settings, the Shell Urban Science Educator Development Award is designed to help strengthen quality science teaching and enhance teacher content knowledge.

“Meeting these awardees was a highlight of mine at the Denver conference,” said NSTA President Julie Luft. “They spoke of their passion for student learning and dedication to cultivating the next generation of STEM professionals. The stories they shared about students and their innovative work in the classroom highlighted their expertise and brilliance as teachers. They exemplify the Shell Urban Science Educator Development Awards.”

Each of the teachers received $1,800 for expenses to attend NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in Denver, which took place March 20–23.
