Marquis Who's Who Honors James Eyerman, MD, as a Top Doctor

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 9, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors James Eyerman, MD, as a top doctor for his expertise in psychiatric health care. As a distinguished psychiatrist and breathwork practitioner, Dr. Eyerman explores a wide range of nontraditional therapeutic methods to achieve better outcomes for his patients. Through his work, he asserts that there are effective alternatives to traditional therapy.

Before beginning his professional career, Dr. Eyerman established an academic foundation. He earned a medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1974 and completed a residency in psychiatry at Washington University in 1978. Additionally, he was board-certified in psychiatry and neurology through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1980. Furthermore, Dr. Eyerman is trained as a transcendental meditation teacher and has studied with prominent spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sri Ma. He has also been a long-term student of Stanislav Grof, considered the ‘godfather of LSD psychotherapy.

Dr. Eyerman's Professional Career

Following his studies, Dr. Eyerman served as the medical director of Epworth Children's Home in St. Louis, Missouri, a position he held until 2001. In 1989, he was appointed medical director of Maharishi Ayurveda Medical Center and director of the Transpersonal Institute of San Francisco, a role he still holds today. After two years there, he joined the Masters and Johnson Institute as director of its sexual trauma, PTSD and stress programs.

In 1999, Dr. Eyerman became a psychiatric consultant at St. Louis University's department of child neurology. Two years later, he became a self-employed practitioner of psychopharmacology, holotropic breathwork and Ayurvedic medicine. The next year, he also became a psychiatrist at La Cheim Inc. and, in 2008, entered a staff position at Napa State Hospital. Within each of these experiences and ongoing roles, Dr. Eyerman has refined an integrative approach to using psychopharmacology.

Among Dr. Eyerman's most notable achievements is his involvement in conducting a study with 11,000 psychiatric patients at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis. There, he employed holotropic breathwork techniques with zero adverse reactions or complaints. Additionally, he helped pioneer the use of eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) from 1989 to 1990. Dr. Eyerman's contributions to psychiatry have been formally recognized through his designation as a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association in 2016.

Civic and Membership Involvement

Outside of his professional career, Dr. Eyerman is involved in several civic and membership organizations. He is a part of the Transcendental Meditation Ferusha Group, the Syda Yoha Groups and is a consultant for St. Michael's Catholic Church rehab programs. Furthermore, he is a member of the Spirituality and Psychiatry Section of the American Psychiatric Association and the Association of Holotropic Breathwork International, as well as the president of the North Bay Chapter of the Northern California Psychiatric Society.

Published Contributions to the Health Care Industry

Creatively, Dr. Eyerman has written several research papers on subjects ranging from holotropic breathwork to transcendental meditation. Most recently, he wrote six research papers, including "Holotropic Breathwork: Models of Mechanism in Action" in the Journal of Transpersonal Research in 2014, as well as "Magdalenian Grottes, Kalahari San People and a Contemporary Integrative Psychiatric Approach" in the Northern California Psychiatric Society Newsletter in 2013.

Plans for the Future

Within the next five years, Dr. Eyerman plans to develop his integrative psychiatric practice by focusing on incorporating psychedelics beyond his current use of ketamine and holotropic breathwork. Additionally, he hopes to explore alternative treatment methods, such as creative arts therapy, trance and dance. In the near future, he looks forward to presenting at the European Transpersonal Association Symposium in Oaxaca, Mexico, in October 2025.
