Innovative Research Lab Aims to Unlock New Hope for Children Battling ATRT
TAMPA, FL / ACCESSWIRE / November 26, 2024 / Save the Kids Foundation Inc., a 501(c)3 organization in pediatric cancer research, is proud to announce a major new initiative in collaboration with the University of South Florida (USF). This partnership will focus on advancing research for Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT), an aggressive and rare form of pediatric brain cancer.
As part of this collaboration, Save the Kids Foundation has established a state-of-the-art lab at USF, dedicated entirely to understanding and developing new treatments for ATRT. With survival rates currently ranging between 10-30% depending on the stage of diagnosis, the lab will serve as a critical hub for innovative research in this underfunded area of pediatric cancer. A dedicated physician has already commenced research at the facility, marking a significant step toward driving new discoveries in the treatment of ATRT.
Regarding the collaboration, Dr. Mildred Duncan, Research Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Florida, shared her motivation: "The reason that I wanted to do this is because we have several drugs that are effective in brain cancer, but they're adult brain cancers. I wanted to know whether the drugs would work with pediatric cancers in order to help the children"
Pediatric brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among children, yet less than 4% of federal cancer research funding is allocated to all pediatric cancers combined. This partnership emphasizes Save the Kids' commitment to supporting the most innovative and transformative pediatric cancer research. In the past year, the foundation played a pivotal role in achieving FDA approval for DFMO, a groundbreaking drug for neuroblastoma, which impacts about 700 children per year. Now, through its collaboration with USF, Save the Kids is expanding its focus to ATRT, channeling resources into an area that has long been overlooked.
