TGS Announces Commitment to SEG Foundation Campaign

TGS-NOPEC Geophysical and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation today announced a $500,000 commitment to the Advancing Geophysics Today, Inspiring Geoscientists for Tomorrow campaign. The commitment, to be delivered in five annual installments, will provide grants in support of a growing number of university sponsored Summer Geophysical Field Camps worldwide.

TGS is proud to demonstrate its support for geoscience students around the world, said Hank Hamilton, Chief Executive Officer of TGS. Geophysics starts in the field. Survey design and execution are essential in our business. SEG and the SEG Foundation understand this. Through their efforts, the number of summer field camps offered to students each year is increasing. We are excited to provide the funding necessary for this pivotal growth.

For many years the SEG Foundation has provided financial support through the established Projects of Merit process to summer geophysical field camps. In 2008, grants have been provided to nine field camps in the USA, South Africa, Turkey, Romania and Nigeria.

Thanks to TGS, our efforts at promoting the importance of field experience to a well-rounded geophysical education will significantly impact tomorrows student leaders, said Gary Servos, SEG Foundation Board Chair. This leadership investment by TGS will enable the Foundation to increase our level of support to established camps, thus encouraging greater participation, and to foster the initiation of new camps around the world.

Advancing Geophysics Today, Inspiring Geoscientists for Tomorrow is a comprehensive fundraising campaign that will strengthen the geophysical community worldwide. Launched in 2007, with a goal of $15 million, the campaign will close at the SEG Annual Meeting in November, 2008. More information is available at www.seg.org/foundation.
