How to Stop Your Aeroplan Points From Expiring While You're Stuck at Home

TORONTO - February 24, 2021 - (Newswire.com)

Many Canadians spent the better part of 2020 grounded, and it's hard to know how long it will take before you get back in the air. If you're an avid Aeroplan point collector, you may be wondering how to make sure those valuable points don't expire while you're not paying attention.

The good news is, it's easy to keep your Aeroplan points. You just have to do one of the following options, and your Aeroplan points will be waiting for you until you're ready for your next venture.

How long does it take Aeroplan points to expire?

If you're a primary CIBC® Aeroplan® Credit Cardholder, TD® Aeroplan® Credit Cardholder, American Express®* Aeroplan Cardmember, or if you hold Aeroplan Elite Status, your points won't ever expire.

Outside of those categories, Aeroplan points expire after no activity for eighteen months, or a year and a half.

That doesn't mean you have to use your card or your points — rather, it means you have to either earn, redeem, transfer, donate or convert at least 1 point before 18 months is over. You will also be alerted with an email 60 days before your points expire to give you time to act.

Option 1: Keep earning points

If you continue to use your Aeroplan credit card, your points will stay active. Even if you may not be able to use your points immediately, building up your Aeroplan points can help you earn the free flight or hotel stay of your dreams for your next vacation.

This is also a great reason to keep using your travel credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, even if you're not currently taking advantage of some of the best perks like free checked baggage.

Option 2: Use some points

Redeeming any of your Aeroplan points will keep them active, and you don't need to go in the air to do that. You can redeem points for gift cards from Aeroplan partners, some events, or a car rental for exploring your local scenery.

Option 3: Transfer points

Do you have a friend or family member who uses Aeroplan points? You can transfer points to them and keep your account active.

You can also donate Aeroplan points to a variety of charities including Doctors Without Borders and Air Canada Foundation's Hospital Transportation Program.

If you have points or miles with other Aeroplan partners, you can also convert those points into Aeroplan points.

Doing any of the above actions for the value of even one point is enough to keep your plan going for the next 18 months, so it's easy to keep your points active and ready for when you need them.
