When the pandemic broke out in March, people receiving treatment for drug use disorders feared losing access to the medicines and counseling they could rely on.

In most places, this did not happen, and in fact, access to treatment became much easier for many patients who had recovered.

Buprenorphine patients were given the option of renewing their prescriptions by phone rather than their doctor for weeks or months. In March, patients were allowed to take the life-saving drug methadone without risking exposure to COVID-19 by visiting a crowded clinic every day.

Resurgence Behavioral Health Addiction counseling and crisis support are now available by phone. Doctors and addiction experts call for an end to federal and state emergency rules that have saved thousands of lives by dramatically expanding access to addiction treatment. Many support a bipartisan bill in Congress that would extend telemedicine rules for addiction treatment to pandemics. Telemedicine and sessions are a long road to recovery in stressful and isolated times.

Despite these options, drug overdose deaths continue to rise, and experts say that the use of illegal drugs, especially drugs containing the deadly opioid fentanyl, is increasing, especially among young people.

Earlier this month, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released preliminary data showing that more than 81,000 people died of drug overdoses in the United States in May, a nearly 10 percent increase from the same period last year. The overdose data collected from individual states through May showed a steady increase.

The anxiety, stress, isolation, and hopelessness experienced by many Americans during the pandemic may also have been a cause of some drug overdose deaths during this period," said Dr. Michael O'Brien, director of the CDC's National Center for Drug Abuse Prevention and Control. Overdose deaths have risen nationally in recent years, the second-highest number in US history, behind World War II.

In Ohio, for example, harm-reduction groups reported a 20% increase in deaths in June compared with the same month last year and a more than 40% increase in May. In Minnesota, the Department of Health reported this month that the number of overdose deaths in the states rose 31% compared with the first half of 2019. The figures are shocking, but treatment experts say thousands of people in the United States still die of drug overdoses every day because they are not medically treated. If this continues, we will eclipse the total number of deaths last year by the end of this year.

We've been very concerned about this since the beginning of the pandemic, "said Dr. Michael O'Rourke, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

The opposite of a wake-up call system is isolation when you think about it.
