A telemedicine portal, SleepTM, designed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), has been launched by the Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center.

More details can be found at https://sleepmd4u.com/sleeptm

The launch of the AASM SleepTM platform allows sleep apnea patients to participate in secure, virtual health care encounters while staying safe at home, reducing travel and saving time.

Nearly 30 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea causing repeated breathing pauses during sleep, according to the AASM. The chronic condition exposes patients to greater risk of serious health problems including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The remote health care afforded by telemedicine lends itself well to treating sleep disorders by improving patient access to ongoing care for managing chronic conditions. SleepTM connects patients with the sleep specialists at the Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center securely and easily by clicking a link on their cell phone, tablet or computer.

Patients can tap into the system using a mobile app to request appointments and talk to providers via app-based video. The platform supports an information-rich patient dashboard showing health data including details on sleep habits, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and information from SleepTM’s integrated sleep diaries or the patient’s wearable health tracking device. The information can be shared with other members of the medical care team—therapists, nurses, primary care doctors and hospital clinicians. Several features safeguard the HIPAA-compliant system including data encryption, log-in verification and secure file storage.

Founded in 1984, the Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center, Thousand Oaks, Calif., is a full-service sleep specialty practice; they also treat restless limb syndrome. The center’s certifications and accreditations include the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Sleep Medicine, and the AASM.

“The ongoing attention I receive to address my apnea and the feedback provided is greatly appreciated,” a patient wrote on the center’s website. “It has led to much more restful sleep experiences.”
