Despite struggles in Edmonton’s hospitality industry, Alberta Friend Chicken Celebrates Second-Year anniversary this October.

Edmonton, AB - October 22, 2020 - Amid one of the most challenging times for Edmonton’s hospitality industry, one Edmonton restaurant, Alberta Fried Chicken (AFC), is celebrating its second year in business. The eatery is located in the Tamarak neighbourhood and has earned a reputation for frying chicken fresh to order. It also offers four unique flavours of chicken, including its most popular original flavour, Frank’s Red Hot, lemon pepper and smoky crushed chili. The establishment has grown to be one of Edmonton’s most popular independently owned chicken restaurants.

Alberta Fried Chicken (AFC) sees local social responsibility as core to its business model. The profits from every ninth order at AFC are donated to the Edmonton Food Bank. Earlier this month, as unemployment skyrocketed across the province, AFC lowered the price of its chicken sandwich to $1.99 in order to ensure that all Albertan could afford a meal.

The restaurant has also been supportive of those on the front-line battling the COVID-19 pandemic, releasing a specially commissioned song and music video in support of health care workers, all while the restaurant fights a battle for its own survival. At the begging of the pandemic, the restaurant transitioned to a take-out and delivery-only model, a significant departure from its usual business. The increased cost of poultry, brought on by supply and demand issues during the pandemic, has also impacted the popular eatery.

“We’ve dealt with a lot since our opening,” explains Anil Erinchikattil, owner of Alberta Friend Chicken. “First there was the economic downturn, which affected everyone, including the restaurant industry and now COVID-19. It has been a challenge, but we’ve been fortunate. Our customers love our food and even though we don’t have a dine-in option at the moment, they’re still coming by to order or calling in for delivery. Almost everyone, regardless of where they grew up, sees fried chicken as comfort food and I think that is part of what had kept us going this year. We’re happy that we’re able to provide Edmontonian with the food they love and later in 2021, we’re hoping to expand across Alberta so that we can bring our comfort food to even more people!”

In celebration of their two-year anniversary, Alberta Fried Chicken has put out a quirky new ad which has already been viewed more than 15,000 times on YouTube. The restaurant is also offering daily and weekly specials, draws for free buckets of chicken and special pricing on its popular chicken sandwich.

AFC’s music video in support of front-line workers battling COVID-19 can be viewed on their YouTube channel along with the quirky AFC two-year celebration ad.
