Black Filmmakers Face Obstacles

Producing movie portraying White slaves

NEW YORK - July 7, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

Racism in America, police brutality, and protest in the streets. It appears as if the country is in turmoil or has it always been? Two years ago in 2017 a team of independent filmmakers named Hope Hollinsworth Coaxum, Diemiruaye Deniran, and Jerome Enders attempted to launch a project dealing with the root of the problem. Considering the nature of the film it was considered too controversial but as we examine the climate and chain of events throughout the world, maybe the team of filmmakers was ahead of their time.

When the trailer for the Making of A Slave premiered back on Nov. 26, 2017, which can be viewed on the Deniran Films YouTube channel, it had people in amazement; some were speechless and simultaneously very curious. The team termed it “visually stimulating”

Deniran  stated “we had a $2,000,000 dollar investor who loved the story but wanted 100% control of the project. This is not just a role reversal project but a psychological movie showing exactly how you turn a person into a slave, it’s about controlling the mind”.

Considering the climate of America as many are uniting under the banner of human rights, the team believes the masses are now ready to have the conversation and make this film a reality.

Enders stated, “We were blocked by leaders and spokespersons in the African American community. This made me realize that a person can be articulate and knowledgeable, but does that mean they are free from the traits that Willie Lynch produced?”

Although the movie industry has made some strides to paint Hollywood with other shades besides white or light. We have a long way to go, artists should never be censored and must be allowed to retell and share their story from an imaginative perspective. The teams as stated are to have those hard conversations and let the healing begin.

In the movie, The Making of A Slave the main character Einar is from the bloodline of the last great Viking leader Harald Hardrada. His family and himself are kidnapped from their homeland in Europe and taken to Alkebulan (Africa). Einar is separated from his family and sold to a wealthy Africa landowner to work in the caves. The Making of a Slave focuses on one man’s quest for freedom.
