Twin Cities Metro Area New Home Sales Surge Despite COVID-19 Negative Impact on EconomyDespite COVID-19 and social distancing mandates in the State of Minnesota, new home building permits in Minneapolis continue to surge. Sales are steady and residents are still able to realize their dream of building a new home. In fact, the Twin Cities Metro Area saw a 19% surge in permits to build single family homes last month.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Uncertainty and uneasiness have been the predominant feelings of many Minneapolis residents during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.  Though certainly needed to flatten the curve of this highly contagious disease, Governor Tim Walz’ stay at home order has negatively impacted many sectors of Minnesota’s economy.  Surprisingly, however, new homebuilding has not been one of those sectors.  In fact, the Twin Cities Metro Area has experienced a 19% surge in permits to build single family homes in February of this year and on into March.

In February alone, local homebuilders were issued 393 single family home permits according to Housing First Minnesota, a trade group that represents builders in the Twin Cities.  This growth represents the best February for new home increases in the area in nearly 15 years.  Experts attribute the sustained growth to low mortgage rates and a shortage of house listings in the metro area.

This is good news for local new homebuilding companies such as Sustainable 9 Design + Build owned by Chad and Ryan Hanson.  The continued growth in new home sales not only boosts the city’s economy but also helps business owners survive the unexpected economic downturn.  When asked about the surge in new home sales, company owner and partner Ryan Hanson stated, “We are ecstatic and excited for the city as well as for the opportunity for continued community growth during these challenging times.  Further, the sustained sale of new home builds in the area allows for companies like Sustainable Nine Design + Build to continue our mission to provide eco-friendly properties for Twin Cities as well as Midwest United States residents.”
