Non-Profit Organization Cuba Skate Presents the Havana Skate Festival

WASHINGTON - February 26, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

Cuba Skate, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization, is excited to announce its upcoming Ten Year Anniversary Symposium and the first-ever Havana Skate Festival. The organization supports the evolution of skateboarding in Cuba, develops local communities and international connections, and empowers youth through sport.

The festival will take place on April 3-5, 2020, in Havana, Cuba. This three-day celebration will feature various workshops with internationally renowned athletes, skateboarding demos and clinics, speaking panels of renowned cultural experts, photography and art exhibitions, and music performances. Estudio 50, Fabrica de Arte Cubano and Galeria Taller Gorria will serve as our hosts and partners, providing access to not only trendy and hip venues but also socially conscious communities.

A fundamental goal of the festival and of Cuba Skate is to highlight the community benefits that are brought about by skateboarding. The prevalent role played by art and music and the focus on gender and youth empowerment in skateboard culture provide a real example of the social good created by the sport. Thus, the weekend’s events will convene an eclectic mix of change-makers, including skateboarders, artists, musicians, skatepark builders, and photographers.

The events will also showcase Cuba’s unique role in the global skateboarding community. Despite shortcomings in the existence of formal skateboarding infrastructure, including the lack of shops, skateparks or industry, Cuba is one of the most dynamic emerging skateboarding communities in the world. The ability of Cuban skaters to continue to skate, create, and innovate, whether it be in their skateboarding, repurposing of materials or in the creation of skateparks, harkens back to an era in which the only motivation to pick up a skateboard was for the love and passion of the sport.

“Cuba and its talented skateboarders have begun to take their place on the global stage. Skateboarding’s growth, combined with the sport’s debut in this year’s Olympics, presents an opportune moment to celebrate Cuba’s unique blend of resourcefulness, athleticism, commitment to sustainability, and genuine desire to skate,” said Miles Jackson, Executive Director of Cuba Skate.

“The inclusion of skateboarding in the 2020 Olympics is a true testament to not only the athleticism of the sport’s athletes but also its popularity. It is not far-fetched to expect that once Cuba forms an Olympic Skateboarding team, its athletes will compete on par with the best in the world.”
