The International Organization of African Nurses (IOAN) will be having the inaugural launching on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Dallas beginning at 6 p.m. The launching shall be the first time that leaders of the organization are defining and articulating why it is important that African health care providers and non-health care providers stay engaged in seeking solutions to health care problems in Africa.
Dr. Jakki Opollo will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Opollo is a health care expert and nursing scholar that would, amongst other things, highlight the need for a global push to improve health care in Africa. She will also discuss the unique role of nurses and health care professionals of African descent in the new collaborative approach of seeking solutions envisioned by IOAN.
When asked about the event, Dr. Elvis Ngyia, president of the organization said, “The health care challenges and problems we face in Africa, especially in Sub Saharan Africa are similar; from communicable diseases to noncommunicable diseases, and these problems do not respect the territorial boundaries of our countries. Therefore, in mounting solutions to these problems, we must also disregard our country differences.” Dr. Ngyia continued, “During epidemics such as the ebola outbreak, there was panic all over the region, this explains why we must work together to develop reliable and sustainable solutions to health care issues across Sub Saharan Africa. We have no choice, we must collaborate as a matter of urgency and IOAN provides the platform for such collaboration to occur.”
Further stating the motives and aim of the organization, Ruth Ifediora, Dr. Mercy Mumba and Dr. Kristen Priddy, all senior board members of the organization, highlighted the fact that increased globalization and international migration has made health care in Africa an increasingly more relevant component of global health. “Through our endeavors, we not only seek to foster collaboration amongst stakeholders to improve health care systems in Sub Saharan Africa but also formulate solutions to deal with emerging problems while planning for the future,” said Mrs. Ifediora.
“Membership to IOAN is open with different categories to accommodate everyone who wants to be part of the solution,” Dr. Ngyia said while emphasizing that the launching will bring together medical and non-medical professionals who are interested in improving health care in Africa and global health in the long-term. “I strongly urge anyone who is interested in health care to attend our inaugural launching.”
