Free Expungement Clinic and Job Fair Brings Legal Cannabis Career Opportunities to Canoga Park

By: Issuewire

Canoga Park, Aug 15, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - The National Diversity and Inclusion Cannabis Alliance (NDICA), the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, ResCare and the state's Employment Development Department will host a Job Fair and Expungement Clinic at the EDD office in Canoga Park this Saturday, August 17. In the first event of its kind at this location, residents from marginalized communities and/or with minor drug-related criminal records will gain access to employment in California's legal and licensed cannabis industry.

Volunteers from the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office will be available at the Clinic to provide free legal assistance to L.A. County residents with drug-related criminal records, including Prop 64 and Prop 47. Los Angeles public defenders will also be available to begin the process of full expungements for residents with more serious criminal records. The scope of resources offered also includes fair housing and educational and vocational training opportunities.

Attendees will also have access to potential employers who support equity and diversity in the industry. These companies will be actively recruiting and interviewing on-site. The list grows daily, but Element 7, Whoopi and Maya, and CannaSafe were the first cannabis companies to commit to offering opportunities at the Job Fair.

NDICA is a pioneering organization in the cannabis social equity arena, calling for social justice and diversity in the booming cannabis industry. Bonita 'Bo' Money, Founder and Executive Director of NDICA said, "Social Equity and Social Justice go hand in hand and expungements are life-changing. The first step to moving forward for folks affected by the War on Drugs that have been unjustly incarcerated for a cannabis charge is expunging their criminal records. There are 4800 barriers to entry for people with felonies - employment, housing, student loans, occupational licensing, etc. These men and women are still banned from working in the Hemp industry. NDICA is grateful to the Los Angeles Public Defenders office, the State EDD and all participating businesses for this much needed collaborative effort."

California's Social Equity Program/SEP, Senate Bill 1294, was authored by Senator Stephen Bradford and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last fall. It created a state program to provide loans, grants and technical assistance to aspiring business owners and employees in municipalities with equity ordinances. Lawmakers have allotted $10 million for the programs. "We are doing important work, and it's beyond rewarding to partner with mainstream agencies and businesses to move forward this industry in meaningful ways," says Money of this groundbreaking SEP. NDICA is at the forefront of implementing this state Program and bringing these events to communities and people most impacted by the War on Drugs.
