Psych360 Discusses the Importance of Recognizing Mental Illness in Dementia Patients

Psych360, an on-site psychiatric service provider in Ohio, Maryland, and surrounding areas, has produced an article, “Mental Illness in Dementia”. It has been documented that patients with dementia often suffer with other mental illnesses, which can affect how the symptoms’ display. This article seeks to educate those working in the long-term care industry how to consider multifaceted mental illness in their residents and protocols. Valerie Armor, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, one of Psych360’s Nurse Practitioners, discusses how anxiety, depression, and chronic mental illnesses such as schizophrenia can affect dementia differently:

“It is essential to be aware of a patient’s symptoms and note when they change. If someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease also is experiencing anxiety, depression, or an underlying CMI, all aspects of their condition should be evaluated and treated.”

The article advises how each of these mental illnesses display, can be treated, and their prevalence. Armor adds:

“Addressing the dementia can also help with other mental illnesses. Evaluating and treating all of the patient’s conditions help them most as a whole.”

This article follows in a series relating to the topic of psychotropic medications for residents of skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities.

Psych360 is devoted to serving long-term care spaces with psychiatric care and necessary resources.  The Cleveland based company provides services throughout Maryland and Ohio and is currently expanding throughout the Midwest.
