Foreign Relations Vs. Personal interests Written By Jorge Lendeborg

Concerned by what seems to be an issue of passive lobbyism, conflicts of interest, prominent abuse of power and overall lack of ethics which are used in favor of a political faction in the Dominican Republic, all disguised in a letter as “Protection for International Democracy”, which was composed Honorable Senator from the state of New Jersey and a member of the foreign affairs committee, Bob Menendez.

In the letter, originally sent to Mike Pompeo of US Secretary of State, Bob Menendez expresses his “Concern over the current efforts to reform the Constitution of the Dominican Republic” and points out the “Gallup poll conducted in the month of April where he points out that the 68% is opposed to the modification of the Constitution”. Therefore, as a Dominican myself, I would like to clarify the two points that supposedly concern the Honorable Senator Menendez.

Firstly, the same constitution is the one that indicates the procedures that must be done in order to introduce any type of amendment to it, including the one that would allow the current President to present himself as a candidate for a third term, just as President Leonel Fernandez was intending to do. It appears that Senator Menendez disregarded the fact that it is not a sin to introduce amendments in the constitution of a nation, as long as the same constitution is respected. As an example we can mention the USA, in which approximately 11,770 proposals to amend the Constitution have been introduced in Congress since 1789 and every two years members of the House and Senate typically propose around 200 amendments.

Secondly, it is sophist to say that 68% of the population opposes the re-election of President Danilo Medina, when the same poll favored him with 52% approval among voters. Those interested to manipulate the numbers will take 28% of the abstentionists and add 40% of the internal and external opposition to try to confuse us, when the same 28% also oppose the opposition to govern, that is, they are anti-system; it is like saying that the 80% of Americans disapprove of President Trump, because he got 62 million votes out of a population of 323 million, which is also a lie.

I have the honor of being born in the greatest nation of all, which is respectful of our laws and represents the defender of the system that governs us. I applaud and support the interest that we show in the protection of democracies and freedoms in other countries, but I cannot remain silent when we see that a member of our Senate uses his power for what would seem to be private interests.

We know about the relationship between the honorable Senator Bob Menedez and high political leaders of the opposition in the Dominican Republic, such like Vinicito Castillo Seman, one of the closest and most influential men of former President Leonel Fernandez, who would be the only beneficiary in this action.

Recalling that Senator Menendez was investigated in the bribery case together with Dr. Salomon Melgen, a family member of Mr. Castillo, and also involve in a scandal allegation which speculated that U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez used prostitutes while vacationing in the Dominican Republic.

We clarify that the honorable Senator was acquitted in the investigation that was opened, for which we only make mention to demonstrate the relationship between Senator Bob Menendez and members opposing President Danilo Medina, the people interested in blocking the Dominican Congress in exercising their right.

Sincerly,
