How a High School Dropout Became an Entrepreneurial Success by 18: Mike Kandhorov's Story

Marching to Your Own Drum Can Redefine the Rhythm

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / January 14, 2019 / By 16, Mike Kandhorov (aka Mike Kand) knew he had to make a change. Cutting himself off from what he had begun to see as a toxic set of friendships, he began to re-focus on wisdom from the men in his family, including his father and his older brother, Abraham. He also grew closer to his cousin, Michael, who took him in and is now his partner. While working to cold-call on behalf of a real estate company, Mike became disillusioned by how hard he was working to make his bosses richer. At the same time, his father's struggle to keep providing for his family inspired him to work hard and keep his mind on larger goals.

Thinking there had to be a better way than grinding his life away to make other people rich, Mike began exploring avenues of work for himself. This is how he found MCA, a business model that provides merchant cash advances. Compared to cold-calling, Mike felt he had found his vocation. Mike spent a year shadowing industry vets until he felt ready to strike out on his own. From working under their tutelage with MCA to opening up his own lending platform, Mike's success skyrocketed.

This is not to say it was a smooth transition at all times: For example, one of Mike's most constructive failures was when he first decided to syndicate on one of his largest deals so far: A $150,000 deal that required him to put all of $30,000 of his assets in. Unfortunately, the deal collapsed because the merchant filed for bankruptcy and defaulted.

Yet Mike chose to look at this moment as a lesson, rather than a failure. The takeaway? "Never get your hopes up, don't ever rely on one plan. Always have a back-up plan in case the first one fails!"

One reason for Mike's success is his attitude toward lifelong learning. Like Mark Twain, Mike has never let his schooling get in the way of his education! Although his formal schooling has ended, he emphasizes that his education continues today. "Every day is a new day to learn something new." With this attitude, he has picked up many different skills and opportunities. At this point, he funds many types of businesses and seeks to provide a one-stop lending shop for all businesses, trying to give them the leg up that can help them get to their own place of autonomy and confidence, as he has done.

Mike's early success should not intimidate you. In fact, it should be inspiring. If a high school-aged young man can strike out on his own, choosing to rid himself of negative influences, then many others can make decisions for themselves and go against the grain. Society's prescriptions are not fully necessary, and with the right attitude and approach, people can find their own way of living fulfilling lives.
