Palmdale School District PROMISE Aims to Give Students High Levels of Competency for Success Now, in High School, and Beyond

Near the end of 2014, Palmdale School District, Board, and community members came together to form a strategic plan for everyone involved in the district to have a common goal to put student achievement at the forefront of education, and out of that goal the Palmdale PROMISE was born. Palmdale PROMISE started with the hopes and expectations of the community for Palmdale students being turned into goals and guidelines for district staff to strive towards. At the core of the Palmdale PROMISE are six essentials that define the promise, a pledge for each staff, student, and community member to do their part, and five strategic goals to carry out the action plan.

Promise stands for Pursuing Remarkable Opportunities to Marshal Innovation, Inspiration, and Imagination for Success & Engagement, and the acronym represents Palmdale’s leadership strategy for dramatically improving educational outcomes for Palmdale’s students. The six essentials, outlined more in depth at Palmdale PROMISE Summary, include the values and beliefs, vision/mission/definition of student success, theory of action, design principles, strategic goals, and instructional priorities of the Palmdale PROMISE that all link together to provide students with the best possible education.

The five strategic goals outlined within the six essentials form the framework that is helping the district make powerful and lasting changes. Those goals are:

1. Dramatically improve student engagement and achievement through access to powerful learning opportunities.

2. Create and sustain globally-competitive learning environments of high intellectual performance across the curriculum and in all areas needed for 21st century success for students, including the opportunity for development of high levels of multilingual and STEAM competencies.

3. Provide strategic direction and support to district administrators, principals, teachers, and sites focused on improving the quality of classroom instruction and interaction in every classroom in every school.

4. Create and support safe, affirming, equitable, and enriched globally-competitive school environments for participatory, restorative, inclusive, and culturally and linguistically responsive learning and interaction for students.

5. Engage diverse families and communities in powerful learning and collaboration.

Palmdale School District is excited to continue to make the Palmdale PROMISE a priority and urges community members, students, and staff of the district to take the pledge to believe in the Palmdale PROMISE and work actively to support the implementation of the program. Raúl Maldonado, Superintendent of Palmdale School District said, “The time is right for us to move forward. Our students need for us to provide them with a 21st century education, and this plan will guide our efforts to prepare Palmdale students to become global citizens… They live in a global world that requires high levels of competency… We need to be able to prepare them for that world. We need to be able to walk our talk and live our values.”

Palmdale’s commitment to preparing their students for the future is the foundation of the Palmdale PROMISE and the foundation of the work every person involved at Palmdale School District does.
