SEH Receives Three Excellence Awards from American Planning Association – Wisconsin Chapter

Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH®) and its partnering clients received three of the eight total awards distributed during the 2018 American Planning Association (APA) – Wisconsin Chapter Annual Planning Conference. Taking place in Madison, Wisconsin, the awards were created to “give recognition to outstanding achievements and innovations in planning.”

As expanded on below, the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee (RACM), Harbor District, Inc. and SEH received a Planning Excellence Award for their collaboration on the Harbor District Water & Land Use Plan. The City of River Falls and SEH also received a Planning Excellence Award for the Kinni Corridor Plan. The City of Onalaska and SEH earned a Great Places Wisconsin Award for their partnership on the Great River Landing.

“We’re thrilled to receive these awards alongside communities we’re invested in and care about,” said Darren Fortney, SEH Project Manager for the Harbor District Water & Land Use Plan. “Above all, we’re excited to see Milwaukee, Onalaska and River Falls rewarded for the investments they’ve made in their communities.”

Harbor District Water & Land Use Plan – RACM and Harbor District, Inc.
The RACM and Harbor District partnered with SEH to create a water and land use plan that would guide decisions around shoreline treatments, railway alignments, commercial truck access, open space and trail networks, environmental corridors and waterside use within Milwaukee’s Harbor District.

SEH completed an integrated planning and alternatives analysis that included several major frameworks: transportation, public access, ecological restoration and sustainable stormwater management. These frameworks created a sustainable plan for future investment and expanding development within the District. Recommendations from this analysis are now being used to define and promote future land use for the District.

Kinni Corridor Plan – City of River Falls
River Falls recently received a five-year extension of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license to operate two hydroelectric facilities on the Kinnickinnic River. FERC approved the City’s strategy to develop a Corridor Plan to investigate all issues related to relicensing and considering future removal of the River’s two dams.

The City partnered with SEH to uncover all options and engage the community in order to make critical decisions regarding the future of the licenses. SEH also led studies and investigations critical to the corridor study and relicensing process. SEH conducted a variety of technical evaluations and presented them to the City Council – leading to an award-winning Corridor Plan for the Kinnickinnic River.

“SEH is honored to be recognized for our collaboration with the City in the areas of public engagement and technical analysis, ultimately to benefit the Kinnickinnic River and entire river corridor,” said Mark Lobermeier, SEH Project Manager for the Kinni Corridor Plan.

Great River Landing – City of Onalaska
Onalaska had the vision of bringing multi-generational and cultural communities together by creating venues and recreational opportunities for music, education and the arts, and linking the waterfront area to the broader riverfront trail system. SEH was selected to develop a program in close partnership with the community – including all water areas, islands, marsh areas, bluffs and uplands. SEH also provided schematic design and engineering documents, in addition to other planning, coordination, public involvement and architecture.
