In 2017, approx. 34K tonnes of greasy wool were imported worldwide; moving up by 10% against the previous year figure. In general, greasy wool imports continue to indicate a temperate setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017, an increase of 10% from the previous year level. Global import peaked of 50K tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.
In value terms, greasy wool imports amounted to $200M in 2017. In general, greasy wool imports continue to indicate a pronounced growth. Over the period under review, greasy wool imports reached its maximum level of $344M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.
Greasy wool Imports By Country
The imports of the four major importers of greasy wool, namely the UK, Germany, Japan, and the U.S., represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Singapore (1.9K tonnes), generating 6% share of total imports. Belgium (1.3K tonnes), Canada (1.2K tonnes), Italy (1.2K tonnes), the Netherlands (1.1K tonnes), China (946 tonnes), France (818 tonnes), and Uruguay (715 tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Germany (+4.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest greasy wool markets worldwide were Germany ($30M), the U.S. ($23M), and the UK ($22M), with a combined 38% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Japan, the Netherlands, France, Singapore, Belgium, Italy, Canada, China and Uruguay, which together accounted for a further 32%.
Uruguay (+8.5% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Greasy wool Import Prices By Country
In 2017, the average import price for greasy wool amounted to $5,857 per tonne, lowering by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, greasy wool import price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012, when import price increased by 50% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average import price for greasy wool attained its maximum level of $8,648 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.
There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was France ($12 per kg), while China ($3,326 per tonne) was among the lowest.
