Hazelnut Imports

In 2017, approx. 35K tonnes of hazelnuts were imported worldwide; approximately equating the previous year level. In general, hazelnut imports continue to indicate a moderate decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012, when imports increased by 45% year-to-year. In that year, hazelnut imports reached its maximum volume of 57K tonnes. From 2013 to 2017, growth of hazelnut imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, hazelnut imports totaled $134M in 2017. In general, it indicated a temperate increase from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, hazelnut imports decreased by -28.0% against its level of 2013. Global import peaked of $186M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Hazelnut Imports By Country

Viet Nam (18K tonnes) prevails in hazelnut imports structure, resulting at 18K tonnes, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2017. China, Hong Kong SAR (3.3K tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Italy (3K tonnes). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total imports. The U.S. (1.4K tonnes), Germany (1.1K tonnes), Russia (1.1K tonnes), Canada (1.1K tonnes), China (948 tonnes), France (756 tonnes), Spain (527 tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (527 tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Viet Nam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern of hazelnuts imports. At the same time, Russia (+18.4%), Saudi Arabia (+18.2%), the U.S. (+13.0%), France (+4.2%), and Canada (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2007-2017. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-2.0%), Spain (-5.7%), Germany (-9.7%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2017, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR, and Germany increased by 28%, and 6% percentage points, while Russia (-2.5%), the U.S. (-2.9%), and Viet Nam (-3.9%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Viet Nam ($62M) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts worldwide, making up 46% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($13M), with the share of 10% of global imports. It was followed by China, Hong Kong SAR, with the share of 8%.

In Viet Nam, hazelnut imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2007-2017. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Canada (+19.9% per year) and China, Hong Kong SAR (-8.9% per year).

Hazelnut Import Prices By Country

The average hazelnut import price stood at $3,851 per tonne in 2017, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, hazelnut import price decreased by -20.2% against its level of 2015. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when it surged by 26% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for hazelnut attained its maximum level of $4,826 per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Canada ($12 per kg), while Saudi Arabia ($261 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Canada (+15.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
