In 2017, China (2.1M tonnes), distantly followed by Viet Nam (1.2M tonnes), Bangladesh (927K tonnes), Turkey (925K tonnes), Indonesia (792K tonnes), Pakistan (559K tonnes), and India (529K tonnes) were the major importers of fiber crops (primary), together comprising 72% of total imports. Mexico (261K tonnes), South Korea (226K tonnes), Thailand (215K tonnes), and Belgium (154K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Viet Nam (+18.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest primary fiber crop markets worldwide were China ($2.8B), Viet Nam ($2B), and Bangladesh ($1.7B), together comprising 42% of global imports.
Viet Nam (+22.5% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Primary fiber crop Import Prices By Country
In 2017, the average import price for fiber crops (primary) amounted to $1,595 per tonne, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a measured increase from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, an increase of 45% y-o-y. In that year, average import price for primary fiber crop attained its maximum level of $2,546 per tonne. From 2012 to 2017, growth of average import price for primary fiber crop stood at a somewhat lower level.
Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was India ($1,982 per tonne), while Belgium ($679 per tonne) was among the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by India (+6.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
