Garlic Imports
In 2017, the amount of garlic imported worldwide totaled 2.1M tonnes, increasing by 8% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed over the period under review. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, an increase of 12% against the previous year level. Global import peaked in 2017, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, garlic imports totaled $3.2B in 2017. Overall, garlic imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, garlic imports attained its maximum level of $3.2B in 2016, falling back in the following year.
Garlic Imports By Country
Indonesia was the main importer of garlic in the world, with the volume of imports amounting to 550K tonnes, which was approx. 26% of total imports in 2017. Viet Nam (198K tonnes) ranks second in terms of the global imports with a 9% share, followed by Brazil (8%), and Malaysia (7%). The U.S. (78K tonnes), the Philippines (68K tonnes), the United Arab Emirates (61K tonnes), Thailand (57K tonnes), Russia (54K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (46K tonnes), Bangladesh (43K tonnes), and the Netherlands (38K tonnes) took the mild share of total imports.
Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, Thailand (+10.2%), Malaysia (+4.7%), Viet Nam (+4.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.6%), Saudi Arabia (+4.4%), the Netherlands (+3.9%), Russia (+3.4%), the Philippines (+3.0%), and Brazil (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2007-2017. Bangladesh experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the U.S. (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (-1.7%), Malaysia (-2.7%), Viet Nam (-3.4%), and Indonesia (-10.0%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest garlic markets worldwide were Indonesia ($590M), Viet Nam ($315M), and Brazil ($288M), with a combined 38% share of global imports.
Viet Nam (+37.7% per year) had the highest growth rate of imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Garlic Import Prices By Country
The average garlic import price stood at $1,506 per tonne in 2017, shrinking by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, garlic import price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 82% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for garlic reached its maximum level of $1,661 per tonne in 2016, falling back in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($2,866 per tonne), while the Philippines ($264 per tonne) was among the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Viet Nam (+31.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
