Baltimore Disc Jockey Brings Action Packed The Indies: An Animated Short to Life

$50,000 Kickstarter Project Comes to Fruition

BALTIMORE, MD, October 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Animation director and disc jockey Tony Drake today announced the premier of his debut project The Indies: An Animated Short with a bicoastal premiere schedule for this November. The Indies: An Animated Short is an action-packed animated short film that was created with a talented and diverse group of freelance artists. The short was produced within a year after raising over $50,000 in less than 35 days on Kickstarter.

Set in a futuristic dystopian society, The Indies: An Animated Short follows an up and coming rapper named Slick who longs for the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a famous recording artist. After blindly signing what seems to be an amazing recording contract, Slick is quickly forced to battle with his morality standards as he navigates the entertainment world while also trying to fulfill his end of the raw deal he made with the devil. Throughout this journey, Slick and his label mates explore the true meaning behind loyalty, the basic instincts of human nature and the constant battle between internal ethics and worldly temptations.

The first screening will take place Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Landmark Atlantic Plumbing Theater in Washington, D.C. located at 807 V Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. The screening is by invitation only, however, those seeking an invitation can send an email to bluegeekmusic@gmail.com. "This project demonstrates that diversity on the screen and behind the scenes is not only possible, but absolutely vital, to genuine storytelling," said director Tony Drake. "The short was something I wanted to create because I personally was not seeing the stories I wanted to watch on television."

The Indies: An Animated Short was a global project that included artists located in eight different countries. Award-winning director/animator and co-director of the short film, Chaz Bottoms, said "Coming off the success of my animated short, All Kids Go to Hell, this project was a breath of fresh air because it involved the challenge of leading so many different artists from around the world to create something really dope."

The animation's lead single "Trouble" will also be released Nov. 16 and will be available for download on a variety of music platforms. The full-length EP for the short will be released early 2019, to coincide with the animation's festival run.

Tony Drake is a first-time director and full-time electrical engineer with roots in El Paso, Texas. After moving to Baltimore, Maryland in 2006 for educational pursuits, Drake decided to pursue his lifelong passion for music as a disc jockey and on-air radio personality.
