MetLife Names Tim Ring as Chief Sustainability Officer

MetLife, Inc. (NYSE:MET) today announced that it has named Tim Ring, currently Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel, and Chief of Operations for Legal Affairs, to the newly created role of Chief Sustainability Officer.

In his new position, Ring will oversee MetLife’s corporate responsibility initiatives. To support this effort, MetLife is forming a new Sustainability function that will report to Ring. It will include MetLife Foundation, headed by Vice President Dennis White, as well as the company’s Reputation Management team led by Vice President Jon Richter, which produces MetLife’s annual corporate responsibility report and oversees all policy-focused Thought Leadership. Ring will report to Executive Vice President and head of Corporate Affairs Mike Zarcone.

“We recognize that the field of corporate responsibility is evolving rapidly and drawing increased attention from all stakeholders,” said MetLife Chairman, President and CEO Steve Kandarian. “This new structure will ensure our efforts are properly targeted and guided by a strong strategic focus so we can continue to build on MetLife’s long history of leadership in this area.”

“Tim’s broad experience in corporate governance, government relations and communications makes him the right person to lead MetLife to new levels of performance as a responsible and sustainable company,” Kandarian added.

In 2017, MetLife made nearly $5 billion in impact investments in the U.S. and abroad to create social and environmental benefits while generating economic returns. In addition, MetLife and MetLife Foundation made $45 million in grants, including $30 million for financial inclusion efforts to help low-income individuals and families access safe and affordable financial products and services.

Ring served as MetLife’s Corporate Secretary from 2013 to 2017 and previously held leadership positions in Government Relations. He began his career with MetLife in 1990 handling media relations.

As Corporate Secretary, he worked with institutional shareholders on a range of issues and with the Governance and Corporate Responsibility Committee of the Board to help it oversee MetLife’s performance on environmental, social and governance initiatives.

Ring earned a law degree from Seton Hall University and a bachelor’s degree in communications from Fordham University.
