New Jersey American Water Takes Part in 4th Annual “Imagine a Day Without Water”

New Jersey American Water joined elected officials, water utilities, community leaders, educators and businesses around the country to raise awareness for the fourth annual Imagine a Day Without Water, a nationwide event that focuses on education about the value of water. Led by the Value of Water Campaign, hundreds of organizations across the United States hosted events and spearhead projects on Wednesday, October 10 that were aimed at raising awareness about the crucial need for investment in our nation’s water infrastructure.

While vast, the United States’ water infrastructure presents some real challenges, the largest being the “out of sight, out of mind” dynamic. When most people hear the word “infrastructure,” they typically think of highways, roads and bridges, but our water network is the same. Access to quality water is something that most Americans take for granted. While they hardly give a second thought, they should. A single day without water service would put $43.5 billion of economic activity at risk and, in just eight days, a national water service stoppage would put nearly two million jobs in jeopardy. It would be impossible for hospitals doctors, firefighters and farmers to serve communities. Not having water is more than just an inconvenience—it’s a public health and safety crisis.

Every year on Imagine a Day Without Water, New Jersey American Water focuses on the education of younger generations by visiting a different school around the state to educate students on the importance of water for everyday living, the company’s role in providing clean water to customers and the treatment process. This year, employees from New Jersey American Water visited Mary Bray Elementary School and Kershaw Middle School in Mt. Ephraim, to lead interactive demonstrations, educational presentations and special activities for students in grades 4-8.

“Water plays such an essential role in our lives each and every day,” said Deborah Degillio, President of New Jersey American Water. “However, it is not always something we think about. Our goal for this year’s Imagine a Day Without Water was to show these children where their water comes from, so that they could walk away with a much better understanding of the work we do and why water is such a valuable resource.”

New Jersey American Water works every day to Keep Life Flowing, guaranteeing health and environmental safety by delivering value, building strong communities and by leveraging innovation and technology. Each year, approximately $350 million is invested in assets so that New Jersey American Water can continue to provide essential services to customers, including replacement of aging infrastructure, upgrades to existing or construction of new facilities, fire protection and compliance with the latest water quality standards.
