Launch of Groundbreaking Study on Finance and Utility Professionals in California

By: PRLog
New research will focus on those who are first in their family to hold a professional career
LOS ANGELES - Oct. 12, 2018 - PRLog -- Today, researchers have launched a unique study on what they call "first generation professionals," those who are the first in their family to hold a professional career. They invite those in utility and finance industries in California to take a short online survey, which will run from today until Oct 21. The survey will ask questions about workplace experience, career path, and leadership development.

"While some studies have been conducted on those who are the first in their family to attend college," said project founder Bernice Maldonado, "almost no research exists on first generation professionals." The researchers hypothesize that there may be unique circumstances that both affect and enable valuable skills among those who do not come from a family already ingrained in the professional world. "Even though I didn't have access to the same social networks or private tutoring like some of my colleagues did growing up, I learned a great deal from my parents and believe that the grit and determination they passed on to me have served me well in my career." But as a first generation professional, Bernice also faced challenges: "It wasn't easy to talk to my family about my career. As my work became more professional, we experienced a disconnect which meant that I didn't have the support network that some of my peers did."

Bernice wondered if other first generation professionals had similar experiences. After realizing that virtually no studies had been completed on the topic, she decided to take on the research herself. Researchers will utilize a mixed-methods approach, consisting of an online survey followed by a series of phone interviews, focusing on the finance and utilities industries in California. The study aims to learn more about the experience of first generation professionals, as well as understand organizational talent management practices that will enable companies to more effectively develop and retain their diverse workforce and create more productive workplaces.

Those who are not first generation professionals are also encouraged to participate, as their participation is critical to provide comparative data.

Data will be released in 2019, and a summary of the findings will be shared with participants, which they may find useful for their own career or company management. A brief summary of data will also be shared for public benefit at www.firstgentalent.org. Participation is anonymous.
