In the fall of 2017, Jimmy and Amanda made a life-changing decision: they quit their jobs to travel the world. The couple are self-proclaimed “chubby travelers." They are willing to challenge the confining tiny seats during air travel. The couple decided that their size was not going to stop them from doing what they love.
Jimmy and Amanda created the YouTube Channel called, “Chubby and Away.” to chronicle their globe-trotting experiences.
“Americans, in general, do not travel like the rest of the world” said Jimmy. “A recent statistic by the US Census Bureau said that only 42% percent of Americans hold passports. He pointed out, "... that his figure is low when compared to countries like the UK. Over 78% of UK citizens obtained passports."
But the issue in the US is more nuanced, as even fewer obese American people are passport holders. The stigma of one’s body fat spilling over into the next tiny airline seat is usually enough to deter most people from experiencing life. Jimmy said, "You have to get used to people staring."
Jimmy explains, “Amanda and I are on a mission. We want to erase the stigma associated with chubby people and travel. We want to inspire our audience to overcome the fear that prevents them from living life to the fullest." The couple want to encourage their viewers to get out and see the world. Amanda points out that size shouldn't limit your experience. "We have had the opportunity to meet new cultures, makes memories, and broaden our horizons."
"Our hope is that we inspire chubby people from our videos," Jimmy explains. "We want to remove the doubt of what they can do." He said that the readers' comments also inspire the couple. "We love to read comments from those who took up traveling after following us on YouTube!”
So far, Jimmy and Amanda have already spent extensive time in the UAE, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Myanmar. But, the mighty chubby duo has no intention of slowing down, as they are already planning to take several other trips around Asia in the coming months.
