LEGENDS TO FOLLOW: GRANT MCPHEE’S ‘TEENAGE SUPERSTARS’ EXPLORES THE RICH SOUND THAT EMERGED IN GLASGOW DURING MID ‘80s / LATE ‘90s

TEENAGE SUPERSTARS // TRICOAST ENTERTAINMENT
From Postcard Records to 53rd & 3rd, TEENAGE SUPERSTARS is a love letter to Glasgow’s '80s music scene that broke new ground in post-punk, indie-pop and other unique and untapped genres. Coming to U.S. digital platforms this month.

Los Angeles, CA - July 21, 2018 -A story of friendship told through music, “TEENAGE SUPERSTARS is a must-see” (The Skinny UK).

As the second installment in Director Grant McPhee’s “Sound of Young Scotland” series, TEENAGE SUPERSTARS captures the radical change and influential wave of Scottish indie guitar acts that emerged from Glasgow in the mid ’80s to early ‘90s. Punk was reborn in the shape of a new type of independent music, unlike any of its kind before. “Scotland already had Scars and The Rezillos breaking down the barriers between artist and audience, but the exhilarating prospect of doing something new is what ultimately developed this strong sense of community. Something beyond Punk,” observed Hero-Magazine

Narrated by Kim Deal (The Pixies), TEENAGE SUPERSTARS begins where BIG GOLD DREAM ended – the short lived labels, FAST Product and Postcard Records were out, as entered the label 53rd & 3rd, created by Sandy McLean, David Keegan and Stephen “Pastel” McRobbie from The Pastels. A sense of rebellion emerged alongside the new label, which launched new music in an alternative way, producing The Pastels, The Soup Dragons, Jesus and Mary Chain and Teenage Fanclub. 53rd & 3rd created universal music success by signing the Vaselines (Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly), Shop Assistants and releasing records from BMX Bandits.

“The richness of this sound, of Glaswegian brutalist naïveté, lo-fi and acid house is why McPhee’s plethora of talking heads never gets boring, with the film avoiding the pitfalls and clichés of other rockumentaries,” wrote The Skinny UK.

TEENAGE SUPERSTARS documents the exploration of the ‘90s Scottish music scene with “interviews and archive footage to provide a more lucid and entertaining account of a seminal period of Scottish music history,” examined Film.List. Director McPhee reminds music-lovers to not overlook that time period and the pop geniuses that emerged from it through rare, archived footage and a vast collection of interviews including Jesus and Mary Chain’s Douglas Hart, BMX Bandits’ Duglas T. Stewart, Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake and The Soup Dragons’ Sean Dickinson (soundtrack: The World’s End, Hellraiser III).

“Many of the bands involved deserve a feature documentary of their own,” continued Film.List, adding, “But all the artists featured in TEENAGE SUPERSTARS are success stories; they put Scotland on the map in idiosyncratic style, and McPhee's film tells their story in granular detail.”
