A little over a year ago The Yard Milkshake Bar was just opening their doors in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Just 13 months later the third location is now up and running in Fairhope, Alabama. With the Grand Opening set for this Saturday, June 23 at 108 North Section Street in Downtown Fairhope.
The Gulf Shores location was highly supported by the local community when it opened and during the offseason. Tourist also flocked to the Gulf Shores location during the Summer months. The hope is that the new Fairhope location will be a place where locals and tourist can come and enjoy all The Yard has to offer.
If you haven’t heard of The Yard Milkshake Bar yet, it is not the average ice cream shop. They specialize in desserts and they do it right! Not only do they have 28 flavors of hand-dipped premium, high butterfat ice cream, they also make these incredible specialty milkshakes with crazy toppings like waffles, doughnuts, cotton candy, chocolate-dipped bacon, brownies, and cupcakes. They serve them up in souvenir mason jars with the logo and Fairhope, Alabama screen printed on them. The best part of all is the nine flavors of house-made edible cookie dough. Any of these can be combined to build an amazing milkshake creation.
The owners of The Yard Milkshake Bar are Chelsea and Logan Green, who have been in the ice cream business since 2011. They decided to open the Fairhope Yard location after so much success with the Gulf Shores and Panama City Beach locations. With over 50,000 Facebook followers and over 20,000 Instagram followers, the owners say, “The Yard went viral online and that is a huge part of its success.” Chelsea graduated from South Alabama in 2012 with a marketing degree and says the marketing side of the business is one of her favorite parts. “I love coming up with the new shake specials, and so do all the other team members. Creating the shakes, taking the pictures of them and then posting them online is so fun and never gets old,” she says.
The two grew up in Gulf Shores, just 45 minutes away from Fairhope. So the new location feels like home to them too. One of Logan’s biggest passions in life is fishing; he got that passion from his grandfather who lived on Weeks Bay when Logan was growing up. They spent every chance they got fishing in Weeks Bay, Mobile Bay and at the Fairhope Pier. The couple love spending time in Downtown Fairhope on weekend events and Mardi Gras. The two even got married in Fairhope at Oak Hollow Farms in 2012.
Where they got the idea? Chelsea says she got the idea for this concept in 2016 after experimenting with some milkshakes at her first ice cream shop Island Ice Cream. She says, “I love combining the flavors and toppings to make new creations. I wanted our customers to be able to come up with their own milkshakes and sundaes easily. The way our menu is at The Yard, everyone will be able to build a new shake or sundae every time they come in.” The Yard menus are made up like a checklist where customers can pick from 28 ice cream flavors, 9 cookie dough's and 56 toppings to create the perfect shake or sundae. They have a “build your own” waffle or doughnut sundae too. They also have cones, floats and bowls starting at $3, for those who are looking to stay on the simple side.
The Yard Milkshake Bar in Downtown Fairhope is a casual milkshake bar with the perfect “Fairhope feel”. When customers arrive, everyone grabs a menu and a wax pen by the door. There are three menus for you to choose from. The “Specialty Milkshakes Menu” has two sides: the “build-your-own” side and the specialty side. Then, there is the “Everything Else Menu” – this menu includes regular milkshakes, bowls, cones, floats, WAFFLE sundaes, doughnut sundaes and more. The newest menu addition is the Shake Boss Menu. This is the half gallon milkshake served in a branded shake boss mason jar that serves up 4 people. Customers mark their choices on the menu and place the order at the register, receive a number and find a place to get comfortable. All that is left to do is sit back and relax with family and friends until the beautiful dessert they just created arrives.
The new location can be found at the new Section Place complex at 108 N Section Street in Downtown Fairhope. Just in time for Summer, they are having their grand opening Saturday, June 23.
