Innovation Machine at WUSD Attracts Student Readers

Warner Unified School District’s new innovation program called the Imagination Machine has made students more excited than ever before about writing creative stories. Through this program, students have witnessed their fellow classmates’ written stories come to life through a professional show. Students are given the freedom to write stories that are one-sentence to a full-page long without a set topic. Without a set topic, the program encourages students to take full reigns on the stories they produce.

The Imagination Machine then reads these stories and chooses one or two of the stories from each grade to plan a full-scale production. The performance is complete with professional actors, music, props, and costumes. Selected authors not only are able to see their work alive as a breathing play, but they also receive a Certificate of Writing Achievement. Parents are invited to watch the show and share in this special experience of a child’s imagination taken to an experiential level.

As a 1st/2nd grade teacher at Warner Unified, Ms. Ann Truong grew up with this program and knew it would have a positive effect on the students’ interest in writing. She was pleased to encounter a wonderful response from members of the Warner Unified community. Teachers, parents, and staff enjoyed watching the show and experiencing the tremendous excitement students felt about writing stories for next year.
