His moving presentations focus on his odds-defying journey, celebrate the life-changing power of education, champion the Latino American Dream and provide thought-provoking insights into human nature and ethical behavior. The Opening Keynote will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 30, at the 20th annual Building Michigan Communities Conference April 30-May 1 at the Lansing Center.

The Building Michigan Communities Conference, which annually hosts more than 1,500 attendees, is one of the largest events of its kind in the nation. Affordable housing developers (nonprofit and for-profit), tax credit syndicators, homeless services providers, homeownership counselors, lenders, property managers and government officials focused on improving Michigan's communities attend the conference to learn about the latest industry trends and best practices.

The 2018 Building Michigan Communities Conference will kick off with a panel of experts that will share history of the industry and what they see as the future of affordable housing in Michigan. This welcome session will take place on Monday, April 30, at 9 a.m. and will be moderated by John Quinones. The Wednesday, May 1, breakfast speaker will be Mark Horvath who is known for his work in transmedia storytelling, social media, cause marketing and the founder of Invisible People. The Wednesday closing luncheon speaker will be Recap founder and chairman David Smith. David is an innovator, entrepreneur and thought leader in affordable housing.

A highlight of the 20th annual event is the 250-square-foot tiny house that will be built in the exhibit hall. The house will be built in partnership with Cass Community Social Services, Habitat for Humanity Michigan and the Building Michigan Communities Conference. At the conclusion of the conference, the tiny house will be transported to the Cass Community Tiny Homes in Detroit, Michigan.

Tuesday Awards Luncheon will honor those in the industry that have gone beyond the call of duty. The highlight of the luncheon is the awarding of the Terrence R. Duvernay Award presented to a leader in the industry who best reflects the ideals and personal qualities exhibited by Duvernay.

More than 100 breakout sessions are planned during the three-day event. Topics broadly address the creation and preservation of affordable housing, providing services to the homeless and revitalization of neighborhoods and downtowns.

Registration for the event is ongoing. Registration details and event information are available at www.buildingmicommunities.org.
