On Monday, April 16, the mayor of Fishers, Indiana, Scott Fadness, will sign a proclamation recognizing the “Week of the Young Child” for the first time in Hamilton County’s history. Earlier this month, Noblesville, Indiana mayor John Dislear signed the same proclamation.

The “Week of the Young Child” supports the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s nationwide event, urging all citizens to recognize and support the needs of young children in efforts to build a brighter future. Hamilton County’s events will help build a brighter future for Indiana by giving every child an opportunity to excel in learning experiences that are worthy of both natural excitement and curiosity.

“These organizations are working to promote and inspire high-quality early childhood experiences for our city’s youngest citizens, that can provide a foundation of learning and success for children in Fishers,” noted the proclamation from the City of Fishers. “Teachers and others who work with or on behalf of young children birth through age-eight, who make a difference in the lives of young children in Fishers, deserve thanks and recognition.”

To recognize the “Week of the Young Child,” the Early Learning Alliance Network has collaborated with local libraries, schools, preschools and other early learning-oriented agencies and organizations, all to highlight the importance of young people in our community.

The Urban Chalkboard of Carmel, Indiana has events planned for each day that includes collaboration with Carmel Mayor James Brainard, the Fishers Fire Department, the Purdue Extension office, the Hamilton County Master Gardner Association and others.

Local elementary schools also have plans that will involve parents, community leaders, cafeteria staff, and others in celebrations that will fully immerse students in developmentally appropriate activities that engage students’ ownership and curiosity.

“The fact that Hamilton County is having community celebrations around our youngest citizens, their families, and their educators and caregivers highlights the importance of early learning, children, and those magnificent people in our community that believe in the importance of early years,” said Dr. Denna Renbarger, Early Learning Specialist for the Early Learning Alliance Network.
