Sal Khan Named San Francisco Chronicle’s Visionary of the Year in Fourth Annual Awards Program

As part of its VisionSF program, the San Francisco Chronicle has named prominent education philanthropist, Sal Khan as its fourth Visionary of the Year. Khan received the honor at an awards ceremony held on March 27, 2018 in San Francisco.

Sal Khan was nominated as a result of his work in bringing free “world-class” education to anyone anywhere. With what started as helping tutor his cousin in math, Khan began expanding on his long-distance tutoring sessions. With the general concept of making education accessible, he created Khan Academy. In 10 years, the site has grown to more than 62 million registered users as well as 1 billion video views. The academy is used in more than 190 countries and the content can be translated into 18 languages.

“Sal’s vision was as ambitious as they come and his Khan Academy is producing impressive results,” said VisionSF nominating committee chair and Chronicle Editorial Page Editor, John Diaz. “His was a perfect example of how the innovators among us are applying their skills and determination to change the world.”

Established by the San Francisco Chronicle, Northern California’s largest circulation newspaper, and made possible in part by presenting sponsor PG&E and supporting sponsor AT&T, VisionSF’s Visionary of the Year Award recognizes leaders in the Bay Area who strive to make the world a better place by employing new, innovative business models and practices.

As the 2018 Visionary of the Year, Sal Khan will receive a $25,000 grant to fund his work with Khan Academy. Past Visionary winners include Chan-Zuckerberg co-founder Priscilla Chan; Watsi co-founder, Chase Adam; and Education Superhighway CEO and founder, Evan Marwell.
