AFOP Announces its 2018 Farmworker Children Essay and Art Contest

WASHINGTON - April 2, 2018 - PRLog -- The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs' (AFOP) Children in the Fields Campaign (CIFC) is proud to announce that it is now accepting submissions for the 2018 Migrant & Seasonal Farmworker Children Essay & Art Contests. The theme for this year's contest is Flourishing in the Fields. Contest flyer and guidelines can be found in both English and Spanish on the AFOP website: www.afop.org/cif.

The Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Children Essay and Art Contests are an opportunity for farmworker children all over the country to showcase their stories before a national audience.  In staging these contests, AFOP seeks to empower these kids by amplifying their voices, and to show America, through these children's works, the difficult realities that farmworker families face each and every day.  AFOP's hope is that this attention will spur action to provide better educational support for farmworker children.

Winners are selected by a diverse panel of national community partners, including the American Federation of Teachers, National Consumers League, Human Rights Watch, and the National Migrant & Seasonal Head Start Association. AFOP will publish the names of winners and their entries in its Washington Newsline and national conference program.  AFOP may also compile and present some of the best art to members of Congress.  All contact information of participants will be kept confidential.

In addition to providing these children with small scholarships to help cover their educational expenses, all first prize winners are invited to be recognized at the AFOP National Conference on September 18, 2018, in Washington, DC.  Coming to the national conference to accept their award is, as one contestant described, "an inspiring, life-changing experience." Winners will be notified via telephone or by mail by July 31, 2018. For more information or to review the contest guidelines, please contact Melanie Forti at 202.384.1771 or forti@afop.org.
