BioScent DX announced today the launch of a first of its kind human study to determine the efficacy of using canines’ scent ability to detect breast cancer in women. This Instructional Review Board (IRB) sanctioned study aims to create a non-invasive test for breast cancer screening.
Humans have long leveraged dogs’ extraordinary scent detection capabilities for tasks from hunting to explosive and narcotic detection. Previous studies leveraging canines in the cancer detection space have yielded accuracy rates of up to 99% (Taverna et al, Journal of Urology 2014).
If this study is successful, patients will have access to a non-invasive screening method to check for breast cancer. Mammograms are the most common current method of screening for breast cancer; however, because of cost and potential radiation exposure, testing is often limited to once every 12 months.
“Women in remission from breast cancer live with a level of anxiety that the cancer may return. They experience momentary relief from that anxiety when they receive the results of their annual mammogram. Our goal is to create peace of mind for these women by offering a highly accurate screening method that they can use whenever and however often they like,” said Heather Junqueira, BioScent DX co-founder and Principal Investigator for the study.
BioScent DX is currently recruiting participants for the study that are in remission from breast cancer and those who are in a high risk group as a result of family history of breast cancer or the presence of the BRCA 1 or 2 gene mutation.
Women who volunteer to participate in the study will receive a sample collection kit. Participants will donate samples of their breath and saliva, which are sent to the BioScent laboratory for processing. Samples will be presented to specially trained dogs for screening. Participants can submit samples as often as they like, and may elect to receive their test results.
