The number of train bookings in Japan has been steadily rising in recent years. This spring it is set to increase by a further 30%.

Japan is one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. Its unique culture, natural beauty, incredible food, and points of cultural interest, have been drawing tourists in record numbers.

In 2017, a record 28.69 million tourists visited Japan and, according to recent statistics, this record will be broken in 2018 for the fifth year running. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), US tourists represented 5.16% of the overall number of visitors to Japan.

Spring is the peak season for tourism in Japan. Over this period you can witness the stunning sakura (cherry blossoming) in its full glory and enjoy relatively comfortable temperatures.

The Japanese bullet trains, known as the Shinkansen, are the fastest way to discover Japan and the rail network practically covers the entire country. The online availability of the Japan Rail Pass has made it easier and more economical for tourists to access Japan’s rail system, buses, ferries, and airport transfers.

The Shinkansen trains have become a feature of any trip to Japan as the rising ticket sales show. The fastest train in operation runs at a maximum speed of 431 km/h, though the magnetic bullet train has reached 603 km/h in tests.

The popular spring season runs from mid-March to May and April is the busiest month. The weather is usually mild with temperatures ranging between 40 to 65 °F.

Travelers wishing to see the cherry blossoms do not always have the best of luck. Sometimes the cherries either bloom early or late. Visitors should check a cherry blossom forecast to find out the best time to go and the best spots to see it.

The last week of April and the beginning of May is known ‘Golden Week’ in Japan. There are a number of public holidays over this period and many locals take holiday at this time.

Transport lines and tourist hot spots are very crowded over Golden Week and accommodation prices are high. It is a popular time for foreign tourists and locals alike.

Summer in Japan lasts from June to mid-September. Tourists generally prefer to visit in the spring months as the summer is hot and humid. Summer temperatures typically range from approximately 70 to 90°F, and this can make sightseeing a bit uncomfortable due to the high humidity.

At the other end of the scale, the cold weather puts many tourists off traveling to Japan over the winter months. In the mountains, however, the conditions are perfect for skiing and snowboarding.

With two major upcoming international sports events, the Rugby World Cup 2019 and the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020, we can expect the surge of tourists to Japan to continue, and to see even more record-breaking years.
