Austin writer turns her attention toward social consciousness through children's book

By: PRLog
AUSTIN, Texas - Nov. 30, 2017 - PRLog -- Author and educator LaToya Easter taps into the internal struggle that many people, especially children, who do not have one or both parents in their life feel about their identity and the sometimes habitual battle with feeling an emotional void that cannot be fixed. The story lingers delicately on the underlining theme of abandonment issues in children who feel a lost of identity because they are missing a parent(s). The plot features a personification of ducks, chimps, and lions in a playful, yet, intentionally improbable mix of characters to display the power of diversity and unity. Illustrated with rustic colors and authentic sketch art by artist Elinor Cowan, Are You My Papa? sets the main character Katolina on a hopeless journey that ends with a powerful message about hope and acceptance.

LaToya grew-up in Greenville, TX, a small rural area. She attributes much of her writing to her personal experiences and the observation of others. LaToya's first novel, Can't Cry (2012) an adult fiction novel, was written while she was an undergrad at the University of Houston. She recalls writing the first few chapters to Can't Cry in one night, after a conversation with her dearest role model, her great grandmother Mammo. She realized in that conversation Mammo was slowly declining in health. LaToya said she felt "a sense of urgency and desperation", to write her first novel because she wanted Mammo to see her achieve her goal as a writer;  a promise she'd made years before. Staying true to her promise, Can't Cry was published prior to Mammo's death.

While on vastly different spectrum's of fiction writing, Are You My Papa? and Can't Cry center on real life trials and tribulations. To LaToya, the only way to tell a good story is to "tap into what people tend to deflect about reality out of fear or judgment". She views characters as the "purest representation of truth that any story can resonate from". This is clear in the depiction of Katolina and Little Chimp in Are You My Papa?. Katolina is as wise in her youth as she is naive, and Little Chimp is the juxtaposition to her naivety. Yet, he is the motif of loyalty and compassion, committed to supporting Katolina in the search for her missing father. Are You My Papa? is refreshingly simple to follow, while making a bona fide point about social anxieties and subsidiary emotional turmoil that exist when the image of 'societal tradition' is not one in which you can identify with.
